Likoma, MALAWI – Likoma Police Officer-in-Charge Kalembo Gondwe has called for strengthened cooperation between Malawi and Mozambique to enhance security and strengthen relations between the two countries.
Gondwe made the remarks during a bilateral meeting held in Lago District, Mozambique, recently, when Mozambique held bilateral talks with Likoma District Council.
He said although the two sides had engaged before, the meeting provided an opportunity to further strengthen their relationship.

“There was a need for the police from the two sides to work closely and understand each other’s roles and responsibilities in order to achieve our common objectives. Continued interaction would help the two sides share experiences and identify areas where we can collaborate in addressing issues affecting our communities,” said Gondwe.
He further stressed the importance of police officers respecting humanity and ensuring that rules and procedures are followed in the execution of their duties.
Gondwe also called on officers to avoid abusing their positions, saying those entrusted with authority should use their powers responsibly and ensure that they are not misused.
Senior Chief Mkumpha III of Likoma stressed the need for people crossing the two borders to have proper documents to help prevent theft and murder in the two countries.

“As traditional leaders, we emphasized the need for people travelling between Malawi and Mozambique to have travelling documents. This will help reduce incidents of theft and killings and provide security to both citizens.
During the talks, we also agreed that immigration officers should ensure that all people entering Malawi from Mozambique and vice versa without proper documents are handed over to the relevant authorities so that our subjects are secured,” said Mkumpha.
