Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General, Brian Banda, has died on Saturday at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre after a short illness.
Confirming the news, MBC Public Relations and Customer Affairs Manager Chisomo Mwamadi described Banda’s demise as a deeply painful moment, expressing the public broadcaster’s sadness over losing its head.
“The MBC Board Chairperson, Board members, Management and staff extend their deepest condolences to late Brian Banda’s family, relatives, the media fraternity, friends, colleagues and all that followed his media journey,” said Mwamadi.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated as they become available.
Meanwhile, a heavy cloud of grief and shock has settled over the media fraternity across Malawi following the sudden loss of one of the nation’s most prominent broadcasting figures.
In a statement, MISA Malawi chairperson Felix Washon expressed deep sadness over the untimely passing of the MBC director general.
According to Washon, Banda will be remembered for his extraordinary contributions to the nation’s broadcast sector and his fearless approach to journalism.
“Apart from his fearless approach as a Talk Show Host, he will be remembered for his unique ability to engage with interviewees and the audience,” said Washon.
MISA Malawi highlighted that the veteran broadcaster’s passing leaves a huge void, emphasizing that he will be deeply missed across the sector for his captivating presence and unmatched broadcasting skills.
“The Malawi media and stakeholders in the broadcast sector will dearly miss him,” Washon added.
Media Council of Malawi (MCM) Executive Director Moses Kaufa described Banda’s passing as a staggering loss to the entire journalism landscape.
Kaufa noted that Banda’s departure is felt deeply across both public service broadcasting and independent media.
“He was widely recognised for his distinctive interviewing style, which combined courageous questioning with humour and an engaging personality,” Kaufa said.
Alongside official institutional tributes, painful reactions have poured in across social media from fellow journalists, former colleagues, and members of the public, describing Banda’s demise as a devastating blow to the country’s media industry.
Former MBC reporter and multi-award-winning media personality Mathews Malata penned an emotional tribute honoring Banda’s enduring legacy in broadcasting.
“The cameras eventually go dark. The microphone falls silent. But the voice remains. He has left a mark. He reached one of broadcasting’s highest offices, but his legacy was never going to be the title or the chair. It lives in the conversations he shaped, the broadcasters he inspired, and the countless Malawians who welcomed his voice into their homes… Koma tachita kakasi Banda! Painful,” wrote Malata.
Presidential Press Secretary Cathy Maulidi, who worked alongside Brian Banda during his time at Times Group, also expressed heartbreak over the passing of her former colleague.
“I mourn him with a heavy heart, but also with gratitude. I mourn by holding on to the lessons he taught me; to be strong, to be kind, and to bring light to people even on difficult days,” said Maulidi.
Banda rose to national prominence through his daring, unfiltered approach to broadcast journalism and political reporting.
Whether holding politicians to account on live radio or posing fearless, hard-hitting questions during high-stakes political rallies, he earned widespread public admiration for his willingness to ask the tough, uncomfortable questions that others shied away from.
His journey to the peak of public broadcasting was defined by remarkable milestones across major media institutions, including Capital Radio, Times Group, and the state broadcaster, MBC, which he was appointed to lead as Director General in March 2026.
During his time on air, his sharp wit, tenacity, and probing interviewing style captivated millions through flagship current affairs programs such as Straight Talk, Sunday Round Table, and NewsTalk on Capital Radio, alongside Kwagwanji, Hot Current, Times Exclusive, and Times Talk on Times TV and radio.
Beyond active newsroom journalism, Banda served the nation in government communications, holding the office of State House Press Officer between 2012 and 2014, before later returning to the State Residences as Presidential Press Secretary from August 2020 to July 2022.
His legendary contributions were celebrated over the years through numerous honours, including multiple Talk Show Host of the Year awards at the MISA Malawi Annual Media Awards and the Television Personality of the Year award at the MBC Entertainers of the Year Awards.
