According to Dedza Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Beatrice Jefita, the accident happened around 6:30 a.m. when a Howo truck, registration number MZ 10508/MZ 10517, travelling from Dedza towards Ntcheu, attempted to overtake another vehicle.
“In the process, the truck collided head-on with a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration number MH 10928, which was travelling in the opposite direction,” said Jefita.
She said seven passengers travelling in the minibus and its driver sustained severe head injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Dedza District Hospital.
Six other passengers who were aboard the minibus sustained various injuries and are receiving treatment at Dedza District Hospital.
Police said the identities of the deceased have not yet been established as efforts to identify them and notify their next of kin are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the truck driver, Alfred Milanzi, is in police custody as police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
