Likoma, MALAWI – Police in Likoma have arrested and detained a 46-year-old man, Rodrick Mwajulo, who hails from Mpima Village, Senior Chief Mkumpha in Likoma District, for allegedly stealing a five-year-old child.
Likoma Police Station Public Relations Officer (PRO), Levison Mkumbadzala, said the incident occurred on October 22, 2026, at around 1700 hours at Jalo in Likoma.
According to the PRO, the suspect allegedly took the victim to an unknown destination while she was playing with her friends at Jalo Market.
“One of her friends reported the incident to the victim’s mother, who searched for the child before reporting the matter to Likoma Police Station at around 2000 hours on the same day.
“A primary school teacher and the village headman found the suspect with the child along the road and questioned him. His explanations were unclear, prompting them to apprehend him and hand him over to the police,” said Mkumbadzala.
He said police arrested the suspect following the report and launched investigations into the matter. He added that the child had since been reunited with her parents and referred to St Peters Hospital for a medical examination.
The PRO said the suspect would soon appear in court to answer a charge of child stealing, contrary to Section 167 of the Penal Code.
